Blood
Blood forms 7 to 8% of the body weight. Thus an adult weighing 70 kgs. has a blood volume of about 5 litres. Blood is composed of fluid (plasma) in which float red and white corpuscles, fats, various chemical substances, etc. Solids constitute about 22% and the rest 78% or so is water. It provides nutrition and respiration to the body tissues and transports wastes of the tissues to the excretory organs. It maintains body temperature. Various haematological disorders are discussed under separate heads like Anemia, Bleeding, Blood clots, Blood pressure, Hemorrhage, Hemophilia, Leukemia, Menses, Thalassemia, etc. in this book.
Three types of blood cells have the following functions:
- Red blood cells or RBC’s: These pick up oxygen and carry it through the body. They also give the red color to the blood and are also called erythrocytes.
- Platelets: They help stop bleeding when there is a cut or an injury and are also called thrombocytes.
- White blood cells or WBC’s: They fight infection and are also called leucocytes. All the three types of cells are made by the bone marrow – a substance found inside the bones.
