Homeopathic Medicine for Insanity – Mania – Schizophrenia
It is a mental disorder characterized by the patient’s inability to distinguish between right and wrong. He has such impulses which he cannot resist and becomes a menace to others. This chapter maybe read with the chapter ‘Schizophrenia’.
Acidum flour. (Thrice a day): The patient sits in a comer of the room. He does not talk – answers any questions.
Agaricus mus. 1M (One dose only): Destroys things which are otherwise required. The patient sings and whistles when it is not required. Seems foolish and acts foolish. He is fearless and threatens others.
Anacardium (Thrice a day): Excessive anger at slight offense. Insanity with loss of memory. Dual personality.
Argentum nit. (Thrice a day): Progressive paralysis of the insane person.
Arsenicum alb. (Thrice a day): Great anguish and restlessness. Changes places continually due to despair. Fear of death. Fear of being left alone. Cold sweat. Malicious and selfish. Immense liking for cleanliness.
Aurum ars. (Thrice a day): Insanity of fanatics, of drunkards and religious persons. Extreme irritability on hearing any adverse remarks about his religion. Obstinate and hard to convince.
Aurum met. (Thrice a day): Great inclination to commit suicide, but is afraid of death. Depressed, dejected and low spirited. Has no guts, cannot face difficulties and considers that he is unfit to live in this world.
Baryta mur. (Thrice a day): Many kinds of mania are cured with this remedy when there is a maddening, excessive sexual desire. He will catch hold of the opposite sex even in a bazaar or in a street.
Belladonna (Thrice a day): The patient is violent, will kick and cry. There is rush of blood towards the brain and eyes. Eyes become blood shot when he is furious. Actions midway between Hyoscyamus and Stramonium.
Calcarea carb. (Thrice a day): Religious mania.
Cannabis ind. Q (Twice a day) 10 drops in ½ cup of water: Dual nature state. Hallucinations and imaginations. Extremely happy and contended. Talkative. Time seems too long, seconds seem years. Has a great soothing influence in many nervous disorders, like mania, dementia and delirium. Anxiety and depression. Must move constantly. Forgetful. Uncontrollable laughter. Insomnia. Constant fear of becoming insane. Sensation as if top of head is shutting and opening. Clairvoyance. Rapid change of moods.
Cimicifuga (Thrice a day): Mania following disappearance of neuralgia or giving birth to a child.
Cocculus ind. (Thrice a day), Pulsatilla nig. (Thrice a day): Mania due to suppression of menses. Fears she will become insane.
Crocus sativus (Thrice a day): Anger with violence followed by repentance. Laughing mania. Drowsiness and lassitude. Laughter followed by weeping.
Ferrum phos. (Thrice a day): Attacks of severe frenzy of short duration.
Helleborus (Thrice a day): Mania of melancholic type; sensation of depression and sinking.
Hepar Sulphuris (Thrice a day), Causticum (Thrice a day): Threatens to kill his family and to bum the house. Insanity due to suppression of skin troubles.
Hyoscyamus nig. (Thrice a day): Face red and gaze wild. Tears everything that he can lay hands upon. Talkative, restless and quarrelsome. Will tear his clothes to uncover. Sometimes sad and at other times laughs. Dangerous and can stab and murder. Some end their life by drowning. She is hurried in manners and is intensely jealous. Makes motions as if brushing the hair or face. Stupid. Wants to be naked.
Iodium (Thrice a day): Chronic mania in scrofulous patients. Mania after acute affections of the respiratory organs. Not concerned about the future. Depression. Sudden impulses to run and for violence. Suicidal tendencies. Talkative, can talk for hours with enthusiasm and over-confidence.
Kalium brom. (Thrice a day): Violent only on seeing a particular person or a particular thing.
Lachesis (Thrice a day): Suspicious. If sees some people in whispering conversation, she thinks they are talking about her. Religious mania. Cruel to everybody and pets. Jealous and hates others. Mania during or after menopause.
Lilium tig. (Thrice a day): Profound depression of spirits. Constant inclination to weep. Fears some organic and incurable disease. Swears and curses. Aimless, hurried manner.
Lycopodium 200 (Twice a day): Patient is always ordering and dictating. Envious. Easily aroused to anger with violence.
Mancinella (Thrice a day), Hydrophobinum (Thrice a day), Cannabis ind. (Thrice a day): Fear of becoming insane. Mentally depressed states at puberty and menopause with raised sexuality.
Melilotus off. (Thrice a day): Unable to fix mind. Treacherous stupor, wants to run away and hide. Thinks everyone is looking at her. Fears talking. Threatens to kill the physician or parents approaching him. Insomnia.
Mercurius (Thrice a day): Frequent spitting. Spreads the saliva out with her feet and licks some of it again. Licks mud of ponds and eats cow dung. Generally, does not harm anyone. Manical, catches the strangers passing by.
Nux vomica 200 (One dose daily): Mania caused by sleeplessness, prostration and excitement. Very irritable, sensitive to all impressions, malicious. Cannot bear noises, odors, light, etc. Fault finding. Scolds and insults others. Loquaciousness.
Rauwolfla Q (Four times a day) 10 drops in ½ cup of water: Insanity due to high blood pressure and irritative condition of the central nervous system. Violent manical condition. 10 drops a dose, four times daily and more often when needed.
Sepia (Thrice a day): Mania during or after menopause with dyspepsia and constipation. Mania due to profuse menses.
Silicea (Thrice a day): Insanity after influenza.
Staphysagria (Thrice a day), Phosphorus (Thrice a day): Insanity due to excessive masturbation.
Stramonium (Thrice a day): Sees and hears imaginary things and persons. Talkative, sad and desires light. Refuses food and water saying that these are poisoned, will ask the person serving these to taste them in his presence. Violent with tendency to commit murder. Religious mania. Claps hands. Wants to pray all the time. Mania from childhood. Talkativeness. May have involuntary stools and urine. Insanity during pregnancy.
Sulphur (One dose daily): Mania following child birth. Does not feed her baby. Walks briskly. Wants to remain quiet. Does nothing else except praying. It is also called as postpartum depression with suicidal tendencies.
Tarentula his. (Thrice a day): Sudden alteration of the mood. Destructive impulses. Breaks and throws away costly things without any reason. Mania with increased sexual desire. Sensitive to music. Must keep legs in constant motion, though walking aggravates. Wants the scalp rubbed.
Ustilago may. (Thrice a day): Mania for always taking a bath. Impulses to suicide by drowning.
Veratrum alb. (Thrice a day): Sadness with stupor and mania. Mania after giving birth to a child. Unsociable. Unwilling to talk. Insanity after a major operation. Cold sweat on forehead and a pale face. Aimless wandering away from home. Cursing and howling at night. Mania during heart diseases. Cut and tear things. Religious mania and mania of a destructive nature. Always busy praying. Covers many types of insanity.
