NOTE: Menses are supposed to come once in a month in mature women who are not pregnant. It is not an illness but it is a factor in women’s life and is an universal function of her body. On the average, women spend 6 1/2 years over their lifetime menstruating, as assessed by researchers. Several problems, as mentioned above, are discussed at appropriate places in this book. A woman’s menstrual cycle is typically about 28 days along with the release of an egg from the ovary or ovulation occurring on the 14th day. It is not unusual for young women, who have just begun menstruating, to have irregular cycles. And as women approach menopause, their periods again become irregular. There are three phases to the menstrual cycle:
- The hormone estrogen is released. This causes thickening of the lining of the uterus in preparation for pregnancy.
- The luteal phase, when additional hormones are released, producing a change in breast tissues and an increase in the body temperature.
- If a sperm does not fertilize the egg around the mid cycle, the final phase begins and the woman gets her periods. Periods typically last for 4 to 6 days depending on the woman.
