Homeopathic Medicine for Pains
For pains, in a particular part of the body or an organ, see under the appropriate heading. Following are the general characteristics of pains. These have proved to be a useful guide but it is not all.
How pain travels
Despite years of research, questions still remain about exactly what happens between the moment you step on a nail and the moment you say тАЬouchтАЭ. Scientists are scrambling to answer these questions in their search for new pain relievers.
- Receptors at the end of nerves in the skin, muscles, bone, blood vessels and internal organs detect a potentially harmful stimulus.
- A pain message in the form of electrical impulses travels along the nerve to the spinal cord.
- The pain message enters the dorsal horn, where the peripheral nerve releases chemical transmitters that activate a number of nerve cells in the spinal cord.
- The spinal cord processes the information and transmits it to the brain via other nerve cells. The spinal cord usually sends a signal for the muscles to contract, to move the limb away from pain.
- The message is forwarded to several specialized regions of the brain that control physical sensation, emotional feeling and thinking.

NOTE 1: Pain itself is no disease. It is only a symptom of some diseases, only the person having it can describe it. So, the underlying cause of pain should be searched. When treated it will cause disappearance of the pain. For example, if the pain is due to a cut, the cut should be cured. If the pain is due to a burn, the burn should be treated. If the pain is due to a fracture, the fracture should be set and so on.
NOTE 2: Despite all the advances of modern medicine, the main remedies used to fight pain today are essentially the same as those used in the ancient times. Opium was cultivated long before Hippocrates, founder of modern medicine. Aspirin and morphine were isolated in 1800s and these formed the foundation of the modern pharmaceutical industry.
