Homeopathic Medicine for Paralysis Agitans – Parkinson’s Disease
Parkinson’s disease is a degenerative neurological disorder that destroys brain cells which produce dopamine, a chemical important for movements. Symptoms include muscle stiffening, tremors and difficulty in moving. The cause is unknown and it usually occurs in people over 60 years of age. The patient retains full mental capability until the end. Dopamine is a key neurotransmitter or message carrying chemical that is involved in more movement.
Agaricus mus. (Thrice a day): Jerking, trembling and stiffness of the muscles. Spine cannot bear touch.
Ambra grisea (Thrice a day): Parkinsonism with numbness of the parts of the body affected. Specially indicated in the aged.
Antimonium crud. (Thrice a day): Paralysis with the characteristic thickly white coated tongue.
Antimonium tart. (Thrice a day): Chronic tremor of head and hands.
Argentum nit. (Thrice a day): Use it with Gelsemium on alternate days when the memory is also impaired and there is spurting diarrhea and flatulence.
Aurum sulph. (Thrice a day): Constant nodding of the head.
Avena sativa Q: Best tonic for debility after exhausting diseases, nervous exhaustion and paralysis agitans. Give 20 drops, thrice daily in warm water.
Causticum (Thrice a day): Unsteadiness of the muscles of forearm and hand. Numbness. Loss of sensation of hands.
Cocculus ind. (Thrice a day): Staggering while walking. Hands tremble while eating or holding things.
Curare (Thrice a day): Reflexes lessened or abolished in extremities. Weakness of hands and fingers, cannot lift the fingers.
Gelsemium (Thrice a day): When this remedy is indicated, which it does in more cases, there is trembling of head and other parts of the body. The gait is staggering. Start with 30 potency and each month go on increasing the potency and reducing the number of doses. Trembling is the chief indication for the use of this remedy.
Heloderma (Thrice a day): Parkinson’s disease affecting the left side mostly with a feeling of prostration and coldness.
Magnesium phos. 1000 (One dose only) Repeat after a week: Involuntary shaking of the hands. Give it weekly.
Mercurius sol. (Thrice a day): Paralysis on account of over-use of mercury or its preparations. Trembling of extremities, specially hands.
Passiflora Q: 40 drops a dose, three times a day, has proved to be helpful to such patients.
Physostigma (Thrice a day): Muscular weakness is felt more on movements and in winters. Palpitation of the heart is felt throughout the body.
Stramonium (Thrice a day): Parkinsonism. Tremor, muscular weakness and rigidity. Peculiar gait and shaking.
NOTE 1: A diet low in protein, rich in vitamin B3 and vitamin E is helpful.
NOTE 2: Parkinson’s disease is very difficult to cure and is often incurable. It starts with tremors and ends up incapacitating the person.
NOTE 3: Rick factors for the disease are head injury, and age-related loss of brain cells that transmit nerve impulses. There is no clear evidence that it is hereditary. The disease is mostly found in the elderly but rarely it affects, people under 50 years of age.
