NOTE 1: There are several tests to detect the presence of albumin in urine and they provide results within a few seconds. One of the household tests, which is reliable within certain limits, is the acetic acid test. Fill 3 parts of the test tube with urine and heat it over a burner. The urine will become cloudy – which may be due to phosphate or albumin. Add 2-3 drops of acetic acid. If the cloud disappears, then the urine contains phosphates and if the cloud becomes thicker, albumin is present. Albumin in urine is a simple form of protein soluble in water and salt solutions, and coagulated by heat.
NOTE 2: Presence of readily detectable amounts of serum protein, specially serum albumin in the urine is a sign of renal impairment. It can occur during fever, hypertension, kidney disorders and diseases of heart. Its presence, however, is not always the sign of disease because it can be found in the urine of a normal person after vigorous exercise.
