Homeopathic Remedies for Alzheimer’s Disease
It is a deteriorative mental state commonly known as presenile dementia occurring in the 40-60 years’ age group. Research has shown that it is developed due to excessive use of soluble aluminium which is generally found in widely used antacid’s and indigestion drugs, and also cooking utensils. It has been found in greater amounts in the brains of people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Aluminium is partially blamed for this condition. If not treated early, this disease progressively destroys vital brain cells bringing changes in behaviour, difficulty in learning and remembering, impaired judgement, confusion, problems with speech, muscle co-ordination and restlessness. This disease requires constant supervision, care and proper use of intelligently selected indicated remedy as mentioned in the chapter “Schizophrenia” and “Memory”.
A characteristic symptom is that the patient remembers the far off and old happenings but forgets the most recent ones. Vitamin E-30C or 200C acts as antidotal to aluminum.
Latest research shows that serious head injuries in early adult life are associated with this disease and may cause dementia in later life. The following symptoms point towards this disease:
- Extremely suspicious, withdrawn and fearful.
- Rapid swing in mood – weeping to laughter or anger.
- Puts the things in wrong places like a watch in the sugar bowl or an iron in the fridge.
- He/she may wear warm clothes in summer and summer clothes in winter.
- He may get lost in his own street. He has no regard for time and place.
- Loss of memory. Forgets the names of familiar persons. Forgets that the carrots were left for cooking on the stove until they are burnt. Cannot find appropriate words at the right occasion.
NOTE 1: Alzheimer’s disease produces a set of above symptoms due to destruction of certain nerve cells in the brain. This disease can strike at a younger age also. It has two forms: 1) Sporadic – which is most common and 2) Autosomal dominant (FAD) — which is inherited.
NOTE 2: Lycopodium and Rosmarinus contain a substance called Haperzine which slows down the breakdown of acetylcholine, the brain chemical, vital for maintaining memory. These two remedies along with Gingko and Vitamin E have proved useful in maintaining memory.
NOTE 3: Gingo Q is widely used to improve memory function and to treat Alzheimer’s disease.
NOTE 4: According to professor of medicine and neurology of David Geffen school of medicine at UCLA for Curcuma Longa (Turmeric root – Haldi) has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties which help ease Alzheimer’s disease because of its wide use in India, the disease rates are lowest in the world.
