Homeopathic Remedies for Iron Deficiency Anemia
Iron, as a component of hemoglobin, is essential in the transportation of oxygen. It is needed for tissue respiration and development of blood cells. An adult requires 0.5 to 1.00 mg of iron per day. Prior to puberty and after menopause, the female requires more iron than the male. Copper, manganese and cobalt are necessary for utilization of iron by the body. Its deficiency causes anemia, lowered vitality, pale complexion, retarded development, tired feeling and a decreased amount of hemoglobin in each red cell. The following remedies work well in curing iron deficiency anemia.
Arsenicum alb.: Chlorosis causing gradual loss of weight. Low vitality, irritability and unquenchable thirst.
Cuprum met.: Copper is essential for utilization of iron by the body. Therefore, it is should be given along with the indicated remedy, not together, but in alteration.
Ferrum met.: It is suited to young, weak and anemic patients although the face may be flushed.
Helonias: It is suited to tired females with great languor, prostration and backache.
Pulsatilla: It is a female remedy and is often indicated after abuse of iron tonics and after faulty treatment of diseases. The patient is chilly and tired. It is best suited to females at the age of puberty.
NOTE: Iron is found in foods like almonds, asparagus, bran, beans, cauliflower, celery, brown bread, gram, egg yolk, kidney, lettuce, liver, oatmeal, soybeans, whole wheat, cucumbers, dates, oranges, pineapple, tomatoes, peanuts, turnips, corn meal and mushrooms.
